Something about the sliding rigger:
Sliding rigger versus sliding seat
We have often been asked to design RowMotion® with a sliding rigger instead of a sliding seat. The sliding rigger is said to be more efficient with traditional rowing, such as our RowMotion, due to less body movement and less pitching (the movement of the bow and stern up and down as the weight shifts) compared to a sliding seat. This is true for short boards or boats, but rowboats or rowboards of 15 feet or more can be considered almost pitch insensitive.
However, there is a disadvantage to the sliding rigger: some of the propulsive power is transmitted via the fixed seat and the friction between the oarsmen's buttocks. For short races this is all right. For longer trips, it causes - believe it or not - soreness and even blisters on a part of the body you do not want to have there. The reason for this is easy to explain: When you push off the sliding rigger with your feet, the force of your legs has to be supported by the seat, otherwise you would slide off the seat. So the friction between your bottom and the seat prevents you from sliding off. And that friction causes heat. And heat on the skin causes blisters. And that can be painful in the long run.
The sliding rigger has slightly better performance than the sliding seat. The reason for this is that during the foot stroke the gear ratio is around 3.5. As soon as the legs are extended, the final powerful stroke with the arms is achieved with a gear ratio of about 2.5.
At the same time, there is a further disadvantage: the design and construction of robust sliding riggers is much more difficult and costly than the sliding seat. This makes the boats more expensive and was one of the reasons why the sliding rigger disappeared from the racing scene.
For recreational use, the sliding rigger is offered by the Canadian company White Hall Rowing and Sailing, who produce the OARBOARD with cheaper sliding bearings instead of roller bearings. And also from Chinese manufacturer WINTECH with a rudimentary sliding rigger and roller bearings.
